Born on February 3, 1943
Magnetic vocal great Dennis Edwards joined the Motown Records quintet The Temptations in 1968 after opening for them with the Contours. His gritty, growly voice enhanced the group’s silky smoothness and he powered them into psychedelic soul with Grammy-winning songs “Cloud Nine” and the iconic “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone.” His voice electrified the funk-infused “I Can’t Get Next to You”, “Ball of Confusion”, and his solo career hit “Don’t Look Any Further”. With St. Louis as home base, Dennis Edwards left and rejoined the Temptations through the years and they were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and received the Lifetime Achievement Grammy.
